For many people, the dentist can be a major source of anxiety. Having a dentist prodding in your mouth can be uncomfortable, even for those who don’t have any fear about the procedure. But it doesn’t have to be this way — sleep dentistry (also known as sedation dentistry) can transform dentist visits into a stress-free, even relaxing, experience.
For patients in San Diego, the sleep dentistry team at Sedation Dental Center is ready to introduce you to the benefits of sleep dentistry. If you’re not sure if sleep dentistry is right for you, here are a few things you should know:
Alleviates Fear and Dental Anxiety
Fear of the dentist is incredibly common, affecting millions of Americans who, in turn, avoid going to the dentist altogether. This can lead to more serious health problems, as foregoing preventative oral care often creates and exacerbates dental-related issues in the long run. At Sedation Dental Center, we have experience working with patients with all levels of fear of the dentist, including patients with severe dental anxiety.
Dental anxiety can have various causes, but some of the most common culprits involve fear of the procedure itself and the pain it can cause. At Sedation Dental Center of San Diego, our sleep dentistry team will choose the right sedation type to make your visit as comfortable and painless as possible. Depending on your level of anxiety and type of procedure, we can use nitrous oxide, oral sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anesthesia.
For patients with mild dental anxiety, nitrous oxide is a low-level sedation option that will allow you to relax while remaining conscious for the procedure. If you have more severe anxiety or are undergoing an intensive procedure, IV sedation or general anesthesia will render you completely unconscious while our dentists work.
Safe and Effective Procedures
If your dental anxiety relates to the procedure itself, sleep dentistry is an excellent choice to alleviate your worries. With sleep dentistry in our San Diego office, you don’t have to be concerned about any discomfort or pain during the procedure since Dr. DeLisle, who has specialized training in dental anesthesiology, will make sure you’re unconscious for the entire procedure.
Many people with dental anxiety cite a previous traumatic experience at the dentist as the cause. If you have a negative experience in the dentist chair, the memory can stay with you for life. Sleep dentistry can prevent this sort of trauma, reducing the possibility of developing or intensifying dental anxiety. Since you’ll be unconscious for the procedure, you’ll wake up with no memory of what happened. And if you don’t remember the procedure, there’s no possibility of it causing mental trauma.
After your procedure, our staff will move you to a recovery room where they’ll monitor your vital signs. You won’t be discharged until we’re absolutely certain that you’re alert and fully recovered from your sedation. Even after you go home, our staff is available to address any questions or concerns that may arise during your recovery.
Helps Children with Special Needs
Children with special needs face added challenges when going to the dentist. Each patient faces unique difficulties depending on their physical, psychological, and emotional state, and they require an individualized approach that isn’t offered by every dentist. At Sedation Dental Center, we offer compassionate treatment for your special needs child, and our expertise in sleep dentistry will ensure that your child can go through any dental procedure they made need.
Sleep dentistry is safe and effective for children, and it can help alleviate common problems that children have at the dentist. Children with strong gag reflexes, difficulty keeping their mouths open, or general dental anxiety can all benefit from sleep dentistry. Our team of doctors will work with you and your child to determine the safest and most effective form of sedative to keep your child still and relaxed throughout their procedure.
If you’re a parent to a child with special needs, we understand that you want a dental team that will treat your family with the sensitivity and respect they deserve. Our San Diego sleep dentistry team has extensive experience working with special needs patients, and we will make every effort to keep your child comfortable and relaxed throughout their procedure.
An Experienced Dental Anesthesiologist
When administered by qualified professionals, sleep dentistry is perfectly safe. However, not all sedation dentists have equal level of qualifications. While most sedation dentists only undergo two weeks of training for IV sedation, treating only 20 patients during that time, Dr. DeLisle has gone far above and beyond the standard training requirements.
Dr. DeLisle is board certified by the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology and holds a certification in Advanced Life Support. During his anesthesiology residency at Loma Linda University, he treated over 2,000 special needs and pediatrics patients under general anesthesia. He completed rotations in internal medicine and cardiology while treating thousands of patients with anesthetics in the operating room.
Dr. DeLisle has experience treating patients with complex medical conditions, including chronic pain, diabetes, autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and Alzheimer’s disease. Patients with these conditions or any other are welcomed and treated safely at the Sedation Dental Center of San Diego.
